Thyra
Thyra is a passionate dance teacher and co-founder of Kizomba 808, a dance company based in Hawai'i specializing in the beautiful dance style of Kizomba. She established the company in 2022, bringing the joy of Kizomba to dance enthusiasts in the community.
My Story
Thyra was born in New York and raised in Hawaii, Germany, and Ecuador by her Venezuelan mother and Hungarian father. She has always had a passion for performing, whether it be on stage or through dance, and loves traveling and meeting new people.

In Germany specifically, Thyra competed nationally and internationally in Rock’n’Roll. Shortly after being admitted to the German national youth team with her dance partner, she moved to Ecuador for three years. Here she briefly tried out ballroom dancing. Once back in Germany, Thyra was able to continue with Rock’n’Roll competitions and win the world championship of formations.

Other than Rock’n’Roll and some beginner ballroom, Thyra has not been able to extensively take dance classes, but has experience with Hula, Bikutsi, and various African and Latin dances. With her combined interest of traveling and connecting with people of different cultures, Thyra found dance to be one of the places to help her make friends and find an established community.

In 2016, during her final semester studying International Development and Service in Portland, Thyra discovered Kizomba by chance when accompanying a friend to a class. She immediately fell in love with the music and connection one feels while dancing and came to every class since for as long as she was able to stay in Portland. which was unfortunately only six weeks. Since then, she has pursued opportunities to dance Kizomba, attending social events and festivals whenever possible.

Thyra is now focused on helping to build a Kizomba community in Hawai'i, where she hopes to share her passion for this beautiful dance and create a welcoming space for dancers of all levels to connect and grow.
